Kate Winslet goes from Oscar win to TV series

British screen star Kate Winslet, who won the 2009 best actress Oscar, will take the lead role in a television adaptation of Mildred Pierce, based on the novel by James M. Cain, Hollywood press said on Friday.

Winslet, who won the Academy Award for The Reader, will be directed by Todd Haynes, best known for his landmark Bob Dylan 2007 biopic I’m Not There.

Although no deal has been struck, Variety said the US subscription channel HBO is a lead contender to pick up the mini-series.

The novel was originally made into a 1945 movie that won actress Joan Crawford an Oscar for her portrayal of a lonely housewife getting into the restaurant business – a move that ultimately devolves into a thrilling tale of romance and murder.

Winslet, 33, first gained popular attention for her star-making role in the 1997 epic movie Titanic, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

Haynes, who will also write Mildred Pierce for the small screen, directed Safe (1995), Velvet Goldmine (1998), and Far from Heaven (2002).

  4. Ok so we first had her obsession with period drama’s and now she is obsessed with lonely houswifes…=.= WHY? Enough with the housewifes already we already got Little Children and Revolutionary Road.

  5. She’s not a lonely housewife. I’m reading the book right now, Mildred is feisty so far. She suspects her husband is finding pleasure in another woman so she basically kicks him out of the house. And since he’s the source of income, she’s going to have to get out and do something to make a living for her and her kids. This is NOT the ‘bored and lonely housewife’ role like the ones in Little Children and Revolutionary Road which are different characters by the way. This character has a dark twist, it’s very interesting. Especially that it’s going to be an HBO TV adaptation.

  6. You’ve got to be kidding. I don’t get HBO.This is not good. I’m not a book reader but I’m a avid movie buff. Any advise.I can’t blame HBO for going for it, but I’d rather see Oxygen or Lifetime pick it up.Heck I wouldn’t care if it was on my horse racing channel as long as I got it.
